Academic Literacies in Higher Education: An Eclectic Pedagogical Approach Drawing on Genre Pedagogy, Academic Digital Literacy, Multimodality, and Metacognition

In this talk I discuss the theoretical underpinnings of my teaching in the area of Languages for Academic and Specific Purposes (LSP). In particular, I will focus on teaching university students to do research-based oral presentations. While my teaching portfolio revolves around the teaching of English for Academic Purposes (EAP), I argue that many of my practices, as well as the pedagogical rationale behind them, can be transferred to the teaching of academic literacy skills in other languages (e.g. Spanish, French, German).

I will open the talk with a brief presentation of the four theories I draw on, namely Genre Pedagogy, Academic Digital Literacy, Multimodality, and Metacognition. Then, I will move on to the practical aspects of teaching speaking skills for academic purposes, using one of my courses as a case study. Finally, I will start a discussion about pedagogical implications for the teaching of academic speaking in languages other than English.
Key words: Genre Pedagogy, Academic Digital Literacy, Multimodality, Metacognition, LSP, Academic Literacy, Transferability, Pedagogy in HE.

NB: The talk will be in English and/or Spanish, depending on the audience's preferences.
