SENSORY POWERS AND URBAN LIFE

Workshop

This workshop will explore the politics of the senses by focusing on contemporary urban environments. In particular we aim to uncover the various and differential ways in which sensory power relations underpin urban life.

Urban environments are rapidly transforming. Regeneration schemes, out of town shopping malls, migration all have a deep impact on the 'look and feel' of the contemporary city. In the last decade there has been a particular interest by city councils in shaping the atmosphere or public life of their inner city. Indeed the notion of 'atmosphere' has entered the commercial mainstream as a practice of architecture and urban branding within the context of the 'experience economy'. As public life has become increasingly commercialised, developers and place marketing has become increasingly concerned with the sensory and experiential qualities of places. Underlying these discourses is an assumption that the experience of places can be controlled, manipulated and produced. Yet, simultaneously, urban spaces create their own dynamics, uses and perceptions.
