INSTÄLLT: Spanska forskarseminariet: Gabriela Mercado, presentation av forskningsprojekt

PhD Seminar, Research profile seminar

Seminarium inom ämnet spanska vid institutionen för språk och litteraturer.

My research project focuses on the images of masculinity and violence seen in the most recent Mexican apocalyptic short stories. I am interested in studying how this generation of writers imagine Mexican men as they are confronted with catastrophic scenarios, which serve as a heightened representation of the chaotic sociopolitical reality in the country. To this end, I work with an extensive corpus of short stories belonging to two different periods (1996-2004 and 2008-2016), defined by events that were considered as ¿potentially¿ apocalyptic: the turn of the millennium in the year 2000 and the end of the Mayan calendar on the 21st of December 2012, also known as the 2012 phenomenon. The main objective of the research is to analyze the possible changes in the way masculinity and violence is imagined, as well as the relation these changes may have with the increase of violence seen in the years between both periods.
