STS seminar: De-valuing nature? Matters labour between the Anthropocene and ecosystem services

Higher seminar

Luigi Pellizzoni, Università di Pisa De-valuing nature? Matter¿s labour between the Anthropocene and ecosystem services
Chair: Johan Söderberg

Modernity has built on a fundamental ambivalence about the relationship between nature and society. According to circumstances, these have been portrayed either as separate entities or as a fundamental unity.

Jason Moore has argued that such game has been instrumental to the rise and expansion of capitalism. The ambivalence is reflected also in Marxist accounts (witness the controversy over the ¿monism¿ of Moore and the ¿dualism¿ of John Bellamy Foster), and is at the centre of resurgent debates in STS (witness the recent evolution of Latour¿s thought).

Capitalism¿s appropriation of the planet seems today grounded precisely on an intensification of the ambivalence, on one side by means of an ontological (rather than epistemic) constructivism, as exemplified by the narrative of the Anthropocene and related ¿ecomodernist¿ positions; on the other by means of a sort of ¿direct¿ subsumption of nature, where the latter is no more seen as raw material, but something immediately valuable, as shown by the expanding market of ¿ecosystem services¿ (or by ¿clinical labour¿, as concerns the human body).

Opposing exploitation and destruction, therefore, cannot anymore build on acknowledging a ¿proper¿ value to the labour of nature and the body, but on the contrary on subtracting them from the chain of equivalences implied in capital¿s valorization processes ¿ literally de-valuing them. The presentation will reflect on this possibility.
