Sifilografía. Diseased Literary, Medical and Political Discourses in the Hispanic World

Lecture, Research profile seminar

Guest lecture within the research area Languages, Literature and Culturality, department of Languages and Literatures. All interested are welcome!

In this presentation Professor González Espitia will summarize the methodology he followed in his most recent research on the radiating meanings of syphilis, together with some "post-mortem" lessons learned after the recent publication of Sifilografía: A History of the Writerly Pox in the Eighteenth-Century Hispanic World (U of Virginia P, 2019). As an idea or sample of the multi-volume project as a whole, he will discuss three moments (Discovery, Colonial period, Independence) in which the image of syphilis allows for a more nuanced perspective on Latin American history and identity. In the last part he will share (and ask for advice on) the next steps in the project related to the nineteenth century representations of the disease.
