Update 31 January: The University of Gothenburg's recommendations concerning the coronavirus

News: Jan 30, 2020

The latest information on the corona virus is now available on a webpage on the Staff Portal. Keep yourself updated there: Recommendations on the coronavirus

The University of Gothenburg is closely monitoring the outbreak of the new coronavirus. The university encourages students and staff currently in or recently returned from the region to stay updated on developments. Non-essential trips to China and Hong Kong should be avoided at this time.

These recommendations have been adopted by the University Management in consultation with the university’s Central Crisis Management Organisation and follow the recommendations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Public Health Agency of Sweden. The university is in close contact with the City of Gothenburg, the County Administrative Board, the Västra Götaland Region and other higher education institutions to receive regular updates and to coordinate responses.

Avoid travel to China and Hong Kong

On Sunday 26 February, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced it was recommending against non-essential travel to the Hubei Province in China. Currently there is no recommendation against travel to China in general, but the university’s recommendation is that students and staff avoid non-essential travel to China and Hong Kong.

This recommendation is based not only on the risk of infection but also because of cancelled flights and other changes in communication options that can make travel in the country difficult. Chinese universities have also delayed the start of the semester, making it impossible for students to begin their planned studies in the country at this time.

When travelling, conduct a risk assessment

In general, a risk and safety assessment is to be conducted before travelling or working in a disaster, crisis or conflict area. This is the responsibility of the relevant supervisor. If you are considering a trip to the region, contact your immediate supervisor to conduct a risk assessment.

The template for risk assessments can be downloaded on the Travel Advice page (in Swedish)

Students and staff who have returned from China

Currently, there are no national recommendations to stay home a specific period for returnees from the effected region. The University of Gothenburg has no general recommendation on this matter. Individual agreements, however, can be made with immediate supervisors or course coordinators of relevant staff and students.

The university is staying in touch with students in the area

The International Centre at the university is in close contact with students in Hong Kong, Japan, China, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. Students and staff in these countries are encouraged to stay up to date on developments through krisinformation.se (information available in English) and to follow instructions from local authorities.
